Three from Bihar drown due to flooding in basement of Jaipur house

Jaipur: Three people from Bihar, including a six-year-old girl, drowned after heavy rain flooded the basement of their house in Vishwakarma area of Jaipur. This incident happened early on Thursday morning.

The victims were identified as Kamal Shah (23), Pooja Saini (19) and her niece Purvi Saini. Their bodies were recovered by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) after a long rescue operation. 

“The families were trying to save their belongings when water started filling the narrow and deep basement,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) West Amit Kumar.

Rajasthan CM announces financial aid

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed his condolences and directed officials to provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to each family of the deceased, with Rs 4 lakh from the disaster relief fund and Rs 1 lakh from the chief minister’s relief fund.

The bodies were taken to Kanwariya Government Hospital for postmortem. All the victims were originally from Bihar.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also expressed deep sorrow over the deaths. He instructed the local commissioner in Delhi to work with the Rajasthan government to gather more information and ensure necessary actions are taken. He announced a financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for each family from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and prayed for strength for the grieving families.

Heavy rainfall caused widespread waterlogging in Jaipur, starting from Wednesday night and continuing into Thursday morning. According to the Jaipur Meteorological Department, several areas, including Karauli, Sawaimadhopur, Alwar, Churu, Bharatpur, Tonk, Sikar, Hanumangarh, Dholpur, Nagaur, and Jhunjhunu, received heavy to very heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours, with Jaipur recording the highest at 173 mm.

Rainwater accumulated on roads and residential areas, causing significant commuting issues. Waterlogging was also reported outside the Jaipur airport terminal building. Jaipur Collector Prakash Raj Purohit visited affected areas and instructed officials to make necessary arrangements. Several schools in Jaipur declared a holiday due to the heavy rainfall.
