Dehradun: Following the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on January 27th in Uttarakhand, three couples have applied for live-in relationship registration. Among these three couples, two are from Dehradun and one is from another district in Uttarakhand.
The police are investigating the documents, and these couples will be allowed to enter live-in relationships once their claims in the documents are authenticated. By providing a legal framework for live-in relationships, the UCC aims to protect the rights and well-being of individuals in such relationships.
First two live-in registrations in Uttarakhand
These are the first two cases of live-in relationship registration under the UCC in Uttarakhand. Both couples have submitted their applications on the UCC portal, and the Dehradun police are currently verifying the documents and claims. If everything is found to be correct, they will be legally allowed to live in a live-in relationship.
The UCC registration district nodal officer, Abhinav Shah, stated that the applications for live-in registration would be directly handled by the registrar. Once the applications are checked at the registrar level, they will be further verified by the police to ensure authenticity.
UCC implementation and registration process
Since the implementation of the UCC, a total of 193 people have applied for various categories of registration on the portal in Dehradun. These categories include marriage registration, divorce, registration of nullity of marriage, declaration of legal heirs, and will registration.
Registration must be done within one month from the date of entry into the relationship.
Although the process of live-in relationship registration and termination is still in progress, the first two cases under the UCC have come to light. In cases where live-in relationships were established before the implementation of the UCC, registration must be completed within one month from the date of implementation. For relationships established after the UCC implementation, registration must be done within one month from the date of entry into the relationship.
Status must be updated within 30 days of the child’s birth
Live-in relationships can be ended both online and offline. If one partner applies to end the relationship, the registrar will confirm with the other partner. It will be mandatory to inform the registrar if the woman in the live-in relationship becomes pregnant, and the status must be updated within 30 days of the child’s birth.
Legal consequences for not registering a live-in relationship
There are legal consequences for not registering a live-in relationship as mandated by the UCC. Failure to register can result in six months of imprisonment, a fine of Rs 25,000, or both. To facilitate the registration process, every person in a live-in relationship must register on the UCC web portal to live together legally. After registration, the couple will receive a receipt from the registrar, allowing them to live in rented houses, hostels, or PG accommodations.
The registrar will also inform the parents or guardians of the couples registering for live-in
The registrar will also inform the parents or guardians of the couples registering for live-in. Children born during a live-in relationship will be considered the biological children of the couple, with all the rights accorded to a biological child.
Required documents for Live-In registration
For live-in registration, several documents are required: a photograph of both the female and male partners, proof of residence in Uttarakhand, and a child birth certificate if a child is born. Additionally, a child adoption certificate is needed if a child is adopted. If the individual is divorced, divorce documents and a divorce certificate are required. In cases where the previous relationship status is widow or deceased live-in partner, a death certificate of the spouse or deceased live-in partner is necessary. Proof of ownership of a shared house requires the last electricity bill or water bill, and if applicable, a bill from the RWA. For those renting, any one document of proof along with a rent agreement and an NOC from the landlord are essential.
