People from the Hindu community have allegedly been attacked by security forces in Bangladesh after community members protested against a ‘derogatory’ post by a local trader against Hindu religion and ISKCON in the port city of Chittagong.
The incident took place in Hazari Goli on Tuesday night after a Facebook post called ISKCON a ‘terror organisation’. This sparked controversy and led to protests out the shop of the man Osman Mollah, who allegedly wrote the post.
Police march after tensions in Hazari Goli
Following the protests, the police and security forces conducted a march in the area in the night and allegedly attacked shops and establishments owned by Hindu community, said a report in News18. Some videos have emerged showing the security forces attacking the shops.
“The angry Hindu community took out a protest after a local youth posted objectionable against the ISKCON on Facebook. The community members protested and clashed with police. After protests, security forces carried out a joint operation,” a local reporter Saifuddin Tuhin was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Tensions after demand to ban ISKCON
A Hindu community leader said the tensions flared after a local Muslim youth demanded a ban on ISKCON. Police reached the spot as tensions erupted in the area. The community leader also asserted that police have detained 100 suspects after a joint raid in Hazari Goli. However, some of them were freed aft questioning.
