Northeast Monsoon Brings Heavy Rains to Tamil Nadu, Schools Shut in Coimbatore and Tirupur
“A low-pressure area over the South Tamil Nadu has strengthened into a deep low-pressure area, which is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the East Bay of Bengal today. The storm is expected to move in a northwesterly direction and may become a severe storm over northwest Bay of Bengal on October 24,” according to the weather department.
It further added that the storm is likely to make landfall over the North Orissa-West Bengal coast between Puri and Sagar Islands on October 24 and 25, with wind speeds of 100-110 km/h and 120 km/h expected in those areas. In view of the heavy rain warning, schools and colleges in Coimbatore and Tirupur have been closed today as a precautionary measure. District Collectors in both districts announced the holiday, citing safety concerns.
The weather department has predicted light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Wednesday and Thursday.
