Chennai: Ruling party in Tamil Nadu- Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)’s allies Congress, CPM, CPI, and Manitheyana Makkal Katchi have decided to boycott the “At home” reception to be hosted by state Governor RN Ravi on August 15 to mark the 78th Independence Day celebrations in protest against the Governor in various matters.
Governor’s activities against the interest of Tamil people: TNCC
Pointing out the reason behind the decision, Stae president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), Selvaperunthagai alleged that the activities of the Governor of Tamil Nadu RN Ravi have been against the interest of Tamil Nadu and the government elected by the people since the day he took office as the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
“The dignity of democracy is being disrupted in the activities of the governors during the regime of Narendra Modi, to a degree that has not been seen in the last seventy years. The impasse in the appointment of vice-chancellors in universities in the state is delaying the graduation ceremony for students after graduation. Also, it is unconstitutional for a governor to continue in that position after his tenure. Therefore, on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Congress, we are ignoring the tea party given by the Governor,” Selvaperunthagai said in a statement.
Tamil Nadu’s Political rift widens
There has been a constant conflict between Tamil Nadu Governor Ravi and the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin on many issues. Governor Ravi, who took charge of the state about 3 years ago, has been criticizing the activities of the Tamil Nadu government from time to time. He also ignored the speech prepared by the government in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in the past.
The DMK and its allies alleged he of trying to change the state name from Tamil Nadu to Tamizhgam. Governor Ravi has also been accused of making Hindutva comments at college events. Due to this, DMK and alliance parties held protests against Governor Ravi.
