New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu government called for a meeting on April 8 with leaders of all legislative parties in the state to address the NEET issue. AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami slammed the meeting, calling it a drama. He further said that it suited no purpose as public opinion is growing against the ruling party’s failure to ensure the NEET cancellation. He had also announced on Tuesday that his party would not attend the meeting.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had previously mentioned on April 4 that the Assembly resolution seeking exemption from NEET had been rejected. It was submitted for Presidential assent. In a party statement, Palaniswami also pointed out that both Stalin and his son, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi, had made fake promises ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections, claiming they knew the secret to cancel the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET). They argued that the first signature after the DMK government took office would be related to this issue.
In 2021, the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu passed the anti-NEET bill, which was backed by advice from a panel led by retired Justice A.K. Rajan. After Governor R.N. Ravi returned the bill, it was again passed by the assembly. As per the regulations, the Governor was required to forward the bill to the President of India for approval. The bill was welcomed by all political parties except the BJP.
In June 2024, the assembly passed another resolution urging the Union Government to abolish NEET by amending the National Medical Commission Act.
