Supreme Court says no to cancelling UGC-NET 2024 exams to be held on August 21

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has refused to cancel the UGC-NET exams 2024 to be held on August 21.

A three-judge bench led by the chief justice of India DY Chandrachud said, “9 lakh students, all preparing for exams on 21, SC putting its foot and intervening is a very serious matter. Fresh exam is to be held in few days, entertaining the petition at present stage will add uncertainty and chaos.. we are not inclined to consider for cancellation of exam at this late stage.”

The SC order comes on a petition by one student who challenged the decision of the government to cancel the UGC-NET exam (held on June 18, 2024) just a day after it was conducted, saying that cancellation of exams adversely affects the students who took the examination fairly.

The counsel for the student tried to persuade the court saying that CBI which is investigating the Exam leaks has said that the basis for cancellation of exam was doctored, but the court refused to examine the argument.

UGC-NET, is a test to determine the eligibility of students for the post of ‘Assistant Professor’ as well as ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ in Universities and Colleges.

To ensure the highest level of transparency and sanctity of the examination process, the Ministry of Education, Government of India has decided that the UGC-NET June 2024 Examination be cancelled.”
