Supreme Court collegium recommends names of 3 advocates for appointment as Delhi High Court judges

New Delhi: The Supreme Court collegium recommended the names of three lawyers to the Centre on Wednesday for their appointment as the judges of the Delhi High Court.

The Supreme Court collegium comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai recommended the names of Ajay Digpaul, Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar and Ms Shwetasree Majumder for appointment as Delhi High Court judges.

“The Collegium resolves to recommend that S/Shri (i) Ajay Digpaul, (ii) Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, and (iii) Ms Shwetasree Majumder, Advocates, be appointed as Judges of the High Court of Delhi. Their inter se seniority be fixed as per the existing practice,” the Supreme Court collegium resolution said.

The Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues recommended the names of the three advocates for appointment as the judges of the Delhi High Court on October 25 last year.

Supreme Court collegium scrutinized and evaluated material placed on record

The Supreme Court collegium consulted colleague judges conversant with the affairs of the Delhi High Court in order to ascertain the fitness and suitability of the names of the advocates recommended for elevation to the Delhi High Court and scrutinized and evaluated the material placed on record.

Supreme Court collegium also perused observations made by Department of Justice

The Supreme Court collegium also perused the observations made by the Department of Justice in the file.

“For the purpose of assessing the merit and suitability of the above candidates for elevation to the High Court, we have scrutinized and evaluated the material placed on record. We have also perused the observations made by the Department of Justice in the file,” the Supreme Court collegium resolution said.

The Supreme Court collegium found all the three candidates fit and suitable for appointment as a judge of the Delhi High Court and recommended their names to the Centre.

The Delhi High Court has a sanctioned strength of 60 judges and it is currently functioning with 39 judges.
