Dehradun: Nainital police continue to investigate reasons behind the death of a tourist Mainak Pal in a hotel at Lalkuan in Nainital district. 44-year-old Mainak, who had visited Uttarakhand for a short trip with two friends, was found dead in the hotel on Friday. As per the preliminary investigation, Police consider it as a case of suicide.
Meanwhile, media reports said Mainak, a resident of Hooghly, South 24 Paragana, West Bengal, was a professor of Philosophy in Jadhavpur University in Kolkata.
Police wait for the post-mortem report
“His body was handed over to his father by the police after the autopsy. We are investigating the case. We are waiting for the autopsy report. If needed, a police team will be sent to West Bengal for further investigation,” Nainital SSP Prahalad Meena told this reporter.
The tourist was under plan to board a train to return to Kolkata before the incident
According to reports, accompanied by his two friends, Mainak had travelled to Uttarakhand. While his two friends continued their journey ahead, Mainak had decided to return to Kolkata. He checked in a hotel in Lalkuan on Friday evening. He was under a plan to board a train to return to Kolkata the next morning.
Trouble for the family members began after they failed to contact the tourist on phone
The trouble began after his family members could not contact Mainak on phone despite their efforts. The family members finally called up the hotel staff members. The hotel staff members repeatedly knocked on the doors of the room in which the tourist was staying. Then, they broke the room’s door. They were surprised to see the deep cut on his hands and neck. Blood was splattered on the floor. He was soon shifted to a local hospital. Then, He was shifted to the Haldwani-based Sushila Tewari hospital. Later, he was declared dead.
Body was handed over to the family
In the meantime, his family members arrived in Uttarakhand. The police collected information from them. “His family members said that Mainak was under depression, and he was taking medicines also,” a police source in Lalkuan police station said.
