‘Suffered patiently’: Who is TMC MP Jawhar Sircar who quit over Kolkata rape-murder?

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Jawhar Sarkar has resigned from the Rajya Sabha in protest against the Kolkata rape and murder case. In a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he vented his angst against what he called a lack of decisive action from her. He pointed out at the inaction and delay in taking effective measures against those behind the crime and the subsequent mishandling of the case.

“I have suffered patiently for a month since the terrible incident at RG Kar Hospital, & was hoping for your direct intervention with the agitating junior doctors, in the old style of Mamata Banerjee,” the letter read.

Sircar added that the public outcry and lack of confidence in the government calls for addressing the root cause of the horrific incident. He said he felt that normalcy would have been restored in the state long ago if the culprits were punished immediately. Sircar not only resigned from the post of MP, but also announced his retirement from politics.

All about Jawhar Sircar

Sircar has served in many big positions till now, from being a CEO to former IAS. He joined IAS in 1975. He was also posted as CEO of Prasar Bharati from 2012 to 2016. During his tenure, he was also awarded the Best CEO award.

From 2008 to 2012, he was the Secretary of the Government of India. He has also handled important portfolios in the central and state governments. Sircar was elected to the Rajya Sabha on an AITC ticket to represent the state of West Bengal. In 2021, he was elected unopposed to represent the state of West Bengal. He had been an MP since then.

Jawhar Sircar’s education

The 72-year-old Sircar was also born in Kolkata, West Bengal. His wife’s name is Nandita and they have a child. Sircar, a resident of Kolkata, studied at Presidency, Cambridge and Sussex University and obtained two master’s degrees in history and sociology. He has also won many big awards.

There has been massive public outrage against the rape-murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The case is under investigation by the CBI. Many people are on the radar of the CBI. The main accused in the case, Sanjoy Roy, has been arrested. He has undergone polygraph test. TMC MP Jawhar Sircar has resigned from the Parliament over the matter.
