New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a Manipur Police constable shot dead a Sub-Inspector, who was his senior colleague, after a verbal altercation between them, officials said.
Constable Bikramjit Singh allegedly fired from point-blank range with his service rifle on Sub-Inspector Shah Jahan, who died instantly, a police official said. Earlier, on Sunday, they had a spat over some issue.
The police are probing the reason behind the altercation. The incident occurred in Manipur’s violence-hit Jiribam district. It happened at Mongbung village police post, an area which is under stepped up security right now.
The dead Sub-Inspector was a resident of Yaripok Tulihal in Thoubal district. He was posted at Mongbung village police post under Jiribam police station. The accused police constable hailed from Naharup Pangong Makhong in Imphal East district.
After the shooting, the other policemen arrested the constable immediately. Senior officials from the Jiribam Police Station also arrived at the scene and conducted a spot inspection. The accused police constable is being questioned to find out the motive behind the killing.
Sources said that Manipur Police forces have been deployed in Mongbung village to maintain law and order in the area amid the recent spike in violence in the area.
An ethnically diverse district
Jiribam is an ethnically diverse district. It was largely untouched by ethnic violence in Imphal Valley and adjoining hills. However, in June this year, violence in the district broke out after a 59-year-old man belonging to one community was allegedly murdered by militants of another community. Following arson and loot, many people had to abandon their homes and relocate to relief camps.
Since May 2023, more than 200 people have been killed and thousands left homeless because of the raging ethnic violence between the Meitei community in Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo groups in the surrounding hills.
