New Delhi: Cellulite is a common skin condition affecting many women, regardless of their weight or fitness level, and appears as lumpy or dimpled skin, usually on the thighs, buttocks, and arms. Contrary to the belief that it’s caused by excess fat, many women experience cellulite even if they aren’t overweight, which can be frustrating. Understanding its causes can help. Hormonal changes, particularly involving estrogen and insulin, play a significant role by influencing fat storage and circulation. Genetics also contribute, as they affect skin structure, fat distribution, and metabolism, meaning if your family has a history of cellulite, you’re more likely to experience it too.
What are the causes of cellulite?
In an interaction with , Pooja Singh, Dietician at ShardaCare- Health City and Certified Diabetes Educator, listed the many causes of cellulite.
“The structure of connective tissue in women, which tends to run vertically, also makes it easier for fat to push through and cause dimpling, especially in areas like the thighs and buttocks. While cellulite can appear regardless of weight, a sedentary lifestyle can worsen it, as lack of movement impacts circulation and muscle tone, making it more visible. Aging further contributes, as skin loses elasticity, and weakened connective tissues make fat more noticeable. Poor diet and dehydration can also exacerbate cellulite, as processed foods and excess sugar can lead to fat storage and skin issues,” Dt Singh said.
How to get rid of cellulite?
While there’s no surefire way to eliminate cellulite, several strategies can help reduce its appearance. Regular exercise improves circulation and muscle tone, with strength training and cardio exercises, like squats and lunges, being particularly effective. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins also helps, along with staying hydrated to improve skin elasticity. Massage and dry brushing techniques stimulate blood flow and break down fat deposits, while topical treatments with ingredients like caffeine and retinol may offer temporary improvements.
Non-invasive treatments such as laser or radiofrequency therapy can also be effective, though they may require multiple sessions and can be costly. Maintaining a healthy weight can minimise cellulite, and wearing compression garments may offer temporary smoothing by improving blood flow.
Although cellulite is a natural and common part of many women’s bodies, adopting a healthy lifestyle and using these methods can reduce its appearance and improve skin texture. Ultimately, embracing cellulite as a normal aspect of the body can help boost self-confidence. On the fitness side, incorporating strength training and cardio can greatly reduce cellulite. Strength training, especially targeting the legs, buttocks, and arms, helps build muscle, which can smooth out the appearance of cellulite by tightening the skin.
