New Delhi: A chaotic scene unfolded at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday as a massive influx of passengers, primarily those without confirmed tickets, travelling for the Mahakumbh, led to a stampede-like situation on platforms 14 and 15. Several passengers were found unconscious and required immediate assistance.
The sudden surge in the number of passengers overwhelmed the station’s capacity, creating a dangerous crush on the platforms. Preliminary reports indicate the incident occurred as people jostled to board trains, resulting in a stampede-like situation.
Railway authorities have confirmed that the situation is now under control, but they urged passengers travelling to Mahakumbh to confirm their tickets to avoid any untoward incident. The lack of confirmed tickets for many passengers likely contributed to the chaotic scenes as people desperately tried to secure a place on trains.
According to the initial reports, four women found in an unconscious state were shifted to the hospital for treatment.
The exact number of those affected and the severity of their injuries are yet to be confirmed. Further details about the incident and the steps taken to address the situation are expected to be released soon.
