Ramanathapuram: The Sri Lankan Navy handed over the 2 fishermen and the mortal remains of the fisherman who was killed in Sri Lankan waters on August 1 to the Indian Navy near the IMBL at around 1 AM today. Later was handed over to the Marine cops and fisheries at 3 am. INS Bitra was deployed From Rameswaram for the operation.

Fishermen in Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram have gone on an indefinite strike with immediate effect on Friday (August 2). The move announced by members of all fishermen associations comes on the heels of the death of a fisherman and the detention of two others by the Sri Lankan navy.

The collision of an Indian fishing boat and a Sri Lankan vessel led to the unfortunate loss of life of an Indian fisherman from Tamil Nadu and the detention of two other fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy in August.
Meanwhile, in a parallel development, 21 Tamil Nadu fishermen detained in Sri Lankan jails for alleged illegal fishing beyond borders recently returned to Chennai airport on Saturday morning after being apprehended by Sri Lankan authorities for accessing prohibited waters and subsequently released and repatriated to India.
