Srinagar: A social activist was shot dead by suspected terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara on Sunday. The 45-year-old deceased was identified as Ghulam Rasool Magray. The man was reportedly attacked, late Saturday night by the gunmen.
Motive unclear, say officials
According to a report in PTI, Magray was attacked inside his house in Kandi Khas. Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, the doctors declared him dead on arrival. The police have begun an investigation in the matter, but even they said that it was not clear why the terrorists killed Magray.
The shooting came just days after the attack on tourists in Pahalgam, and is shocking given the heightened security in the Union Territory. On April 22, terrorists attacked a group of tourists in the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam. They killed 26 people, including a local in the attack.
Following the attack in Pahalgam, the relations between India and Pakistan nosedived. India blamed Pakistan for the attack and decided to close the Attari border. All Pakistan residents were asked to leave India by May 1 and the Indus Water Treaty with the neighbouring country has been suspended.
Pakistan meanwhile has denied any involvement in the attack and called for a neutral probe in the terror attack. They have suspended the Simla Agreement, which was signed after the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
