Bengaluru: Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, who has for long advocated renting over buying houses, recently took a U-turn and purchased his first home. With netizens still discussing Kamath’s change of heart, images of his old rented apartment resurfaced on social media. Surprisingly, the house failed to garner the praise of the internet.
The 7,000-square-foot house located in Bengaluru was described as an “absolute travesty” by Rahul Gonsalves, head of design at PhonePe. Unfortunately, the opinion was not restricted to Gonsalves’s. Many netizens felt the “maximalist apartment” was poorly designed with too many pieces of furniture, unappealing tile patterns, etc. Netizens bluntly called the space “ugly” and even claimed that the pictures had left them shocked.

They even gave unsolicited suggestions that could have made the space look better. Meanwhile, some reminded others that Kamath had the choice to design his house in whatever way he wanted.
One stated, “It’s taken me a lifetime to realise that affluence doesn’t guarantee good design sense. Sigh. Perhaps why some of these interior designers can survive?” Another person commented, “I guess it’s his money and choice… but that place could be so much more Zen… Listening to him speak and how tranquil he is, I would not imagine in a million years he would be okay with this…”
Kamath revealed the news of him being a homeowner on his podcast “WTF is with Nikhil Kamath”. “You don’t have foresight as to when you can move out of the house…,” said Kamath, explaining the only demerit he experienced about staying in rented houses.
