New Delhi: At least six people were killed while three others suffered injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in met with an accident in Ranitali village, within the jurisdiction of Hathinala police station in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday evening. The condition of the injured are said to be serious.
The incident took place at around 7.30pm on the Varanasi-Shaktinagar state highway, when a truck, which had crossed the divider, veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a Hyundai Creta car that was travelling from Chhattisgarh to Robertsganj. The collision was so severe that the truck then crashed into a nearby house.
The injured are in serious condition
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashok Kumar Meena, the deceased included four occupants of the car, the truck driver, and another driver who was on a separate vehicle crossing the road at the time of the incident. Among the identified victims were Sanaullah Khalifa, 40, from Ramanujganj, Chhattisgarh, and Ravi Mishra, 45, from Medical College Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh. A truck driver, identified as Umashankar Patel, son of the late Banarasi Patel from Adalhat, Mirzapur, was also among the deceased. The identities of the remaining three victims have not yet been confirmed.
Three individuals, including two women and one man, sustained severe injuries and were immediately rushed to the district hospital by police teams from Hathinala and Duddhi police stations. Due to the critical nature of their injuries, they were later referred to a higher medical facility.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Duddhi mortuary for post-mortem. Following the accident, senior police officers visited the site to investigate the cause of the truck’s deviation into the opposite lane. An inquiry is underway to determine whether mechanical failure or driver negligence played a role in the accident.
Chaos on the state highway
The crash caused chaos on the state highway, with people rushing to the scene. The local administration, including the district magistrate and SP, arrived at the site shortly after the incident to assess the situation. Emergency services reached the incident site almost immediately, and the injured were stabilised before being sent for further treatment.
The Hyundai Creta, which was involved in the accident, bore the registration number CGIS EB 4141. Local authorities are working to notify the families of the deceased and provide the necessary support.
