Sivakasi: Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district, known as the ‘Fireworks Capital of India’ for decades expect sales to exceed Rs. 6,000 crore this year, surpassing last year’s record sales. The industry has seen significant growth, with annual sales increasing from Rs. 4,000-5,000 crore between 2016-2019 to Rs. 4,200 crore in 2021 and Rs. 6,000 crore in 2022.
The firecracker business is expected to peak in the next two days with Deepavali to be celebrated across the country on October 31, Thursday. Traders have already begun sending consignments to foreign states and districts, with sales expected to pick up from Ayudha Puja onwards.
Sivakasi Firecracker Hub Targets 15% Growth in Sales
Sivakasi cracker manufacturers are optimistic about this year’s sales, citing the introduction of new varieties and increased demand. The selling price and discount of crackers will vary according to each company, with prices increasing by 3-5% from leading cracker factories.
The city’s over 1,000 firecracker factories have introduced 400 new varieties, including sky fireworks, fancy types, and cartoon-shaped crackers. These innovative firecrackers, made using cutting-edge technology, are attracting local and foreign traders. Sivakasi produces 90% of India’s firecrackers, which are sold domestically and internationally.
400 Types of Firecrackers Unveiled in Sivakasi for Diwali
The new varieties include sky fireworks that explode up to 240 shots, Fashion Show 240, which reaches 200 feet high and explodes in 6 colors, and Shota Pansy fireworks that rise 250 feet high and explode violently. Other popular varieties include Classic Guitar firecrackers that explode 12 times in 12 colors.
Regular firecrackers, such as mattappu, tarachakaram, and whip types, are also available. Gift boxes containing assorted firecrackers are popular among IT companies, government offices, and residents, priced between Rs. 350 and Rs. 3,000.
