New Delhi: The condition of CPI (M) general secretary, Sitaram Yechury, who is currently admitted at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), is reported to be critical. Sharing an update about his health on the social media platform, the party said that he has been put on a respiratory support system and a large team of doctors is monitoring his health.
While he was earlier admitted in the emergency ward, Yechury was later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit. Releasing a message on X, the party wrote, ‘Comrade Sitaram Yechury is on respiratory support system. A multi-disciplinary team of doctors is closely monitoring his condition, which is critical at this time.” Yechury was admitted to the hospital on August 19 due to lung infection. He also underwent a cataract operation recently.
Admitted to hospital
Since Yechury was admitted to the hospital, leaders across party lines have prayed for his quick recovery. He has been associated with politics for a long time. He was arrested in 1975, during a time of emergency.
Yechury was also elected JNU Students Union three times in 1977-78. During his student days, while he was studying in the university, Yechury came into the limelight for reading a pamphlet outside the residence of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He also led the demonstration to remove her from the post of Chancellor of the University.
Played important roles in forming coalitions
The CPI(M) general secretary is also known for collaborating with Congress leader P Chidambaram to draft the Common Minimum Program for the United Front government in 1996. He also played an important role in forming coalitions during the formation of the UPA government in 2004. He had succeeded Prakash Karat as the party’s general secretary in 2015.
