New Delhi: Arpita Chatterjee’s play, My Name Is Jaan, was performed on 27 October 2024 in Mumbai. Directed by Abanti Chakraborty, this 90-minute musical tells the story of Gauhar Jaan, the pioneering artist who recorded India’s first gramophone record. With choreography by Raktim Goswami, the play blends Bengali, Hindi, and English, remaining true to its roots while resonating with a global audience.
In an interview with a TV9 Marathi journalist, Indian actor and writer Makarand Deshpande expressed his heartfelt appreciation for Arpita Chatterjee’s solo performance in My Name Is Jaan. Deshpande said, “It was simply incredible! I genuinely feel you could say, ‘My name is Arpita Jaan,’ as an actress can bring so much life into her performance…”
“The stage almost felt too small for her presence. She became this perfect blend of dance, voice, and emotion, making it feel as if we were experiencing something otherworldly with her for an hour and a half. She embodied a character we can truly call Hindustan’s first voice, whose song was recorded and whom we were actually hearing… She sang one song after another, and we couldn’t look away. Her energy, her expression, her passion were truly remarkable.”
