Scotland: Imagine waiting in long queues for security and ticket checks, only to realise that just as you sit down, the flight is already landing at your destination. While most flights are known for being lengthy and tiresome, there’s a unique Scottish flight that lasts only one and a half minutes. Operated by Loganair, this short journey connects the Orkney islands of Westray and Papa Westray in Scotland.
There have been occasions when the flying time between Westray and Papa Westray is even shorter than a minute. The fastest recorded flight took just 53 seconds, achieved by pilot Stuart Linklater.
World’s shortest flight
Stuart Linklater, who retired in 2013, flew this route over 12,000 times – more than any other pilot. He still holds the record for the fastest flight time on this route.
Flights on this route began in 1967 and soon set the record for the world’s shortest scheduled flights. The flight operates daily in both directions, except on Saturdays.

Westray to Papa Westray flight
Covering a distance of about 2.7 kilometres, the flight is roughly the same length as the runway at Edinburgh Airport. It is part of a triangular route that also connects to Kirkwall.
Loganair uses Britten-Norman BN2B-26 Islander aircraft, which can seat up to 10 passengers. Due to the small size of the plane, those in the front row can watch the pilot fly.
Shortest flight in the world price
Papa Westray, home to just 70 people, depends on this flight for vital connections to the mainland. The flight tickets cost between £20to £30. The prices may be lower for locals.
Over time, the flight has become popular with tourists eager to experience this brief journey. Though lasting only about a minute, the flight offers a quick glimpse into the peaceful life on the Orkney Islands, famous for their natural beauty and quiet charm.
Both locals and visitors enjoy stunning island views during the flight, providing a brief escape from the fast pace of modern life.
