Sheikh Hasina lands in India: Why Hindon airbase near Delhi was chosen

New Delhi: Sheikh Hasina‘s aircraft landed at the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad on Monday evening. The C-130 transport aircraft will be parked near the Indian Air Force’s C-17 and C-130J Super Hercules aircraft hangars. The aircraft movement was monitored by Indian Air Force and security agencies from its entry into Indian airspace to Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad, sources said.

According to reports, Hindon was picked due to its proximity to New Delhi. Hindon airbase houses India‘s fleet of transport aircraft, including the C130. It was also chosen to provide foolproof security to Hasina as it is closest to New Delhi.

Hasina hasn’t sought political asylum in India. However, there are reports that she is thinking of taking asylum in the UK, and could leave for London at night or stopover for some time in India. Some reports also say that she might eventually move to Finland.

Sheikh Hasina quit from her post after violent protests in the country. She fled the country in a chopper as a mob stormed into the prime minister’s palace on Monday evening.  Protesters are celebrating the PM’s resignation on the streets. The Bangladesh Army has said that an interim government will take charge very soon.

Over 100 people were killed on Sunday following violent clashes in the student protests against quota system in the country. The total death toll is at least 300 according to police and doctors, reported AFP.

India has told its citizens not to travel to Bangladesh until further notice.
