New Delhi: In a disturbing turn of events in the Shahdara double murder case, it has emerged that the attackers had originally targeted only Akash Sharma, with his teenage nephew Rishabh being fatally shot after attempting to intervene. The incident, which happened on Diwali night, left 40-year-old Akash Sharma, alias Chottu, and 16-year-old Rishabh Sharma dead, while Akash’s 10-year-old son, Krish, was injured and remains in hospital.
A video of the incident has been widely circulated on social media showing the accused firing at Akash, while Rishabh running after the accused. The accused, who came on a scooter, fled after firing five rounds.
Murder planned over past 15-17 days
The attackers, one of whom is a juvenile, allegedly planned Akash’s murder over the last 15-17 days, reportedly due to a financial dispute of around Rs 70,000. Delhi Police disclosed that both attackers had been arrested, and that the juvenile suspect has a previous record, including a charge of attempted murder. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Prashant Gautam, the juvenile was the mastermind behind the attack, meticulously planning the assault over two weeks before carrying it out on Diwali evening.
Witnesses report that the attackers approached Akash, touching his feet before firing, a gesture suggesting familiarity before the premeditated act. Rishabh, Akash’s nephew, attempted to capture the attackers, resulting in him also being shot. Responding to an emergency call at around 8.30pm, Delhi Police arrived to find blood at the scene and the victims in critical condition. All three were rushed to the hospital, where Akash and Rishabh were declared dead. Krish, who sustained injuries, is currently undergoing treatment.
The tragedy unfolded outside Akash’s residence in Farsh Bazar, Shahdara, while the family was celebrating Diwali. The loss has shocked the local community, with police investigation underway.
