Sexual harassment case: Court directs police to immediately reinstate female wrestler’s security

New Delhi: A city court on Thursday directed the Delhi Police to immediately reinstate the security provided to a female wrestler, who has levelled allegations of sexual harassment against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, noting that the wrestler has to appear before the court tomorrow to get her statement recorded in the sexual harassment case registered against Singh.

Wrestlers claimed their security was withdrawn on Wednesday night

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot passed the interim order on a plea moved by three wrestlers claiming that their security was withdrawn on Wednesday night.

The court directed the DCP concerned to make immediate and appropriate arrangements for the security of the wrestler until her deposition is complete and until further orders from the court and also issued a notice to the DCP concerned with a direction to file a compliance report.

The court has directed the Delhi Police to file a detailed report by tomorrow regarding the reasons for the withdrawal of the security of the wrestlers.

Wrestlers have accused former WFI chief Singh of sexual harassment

Wrestlers have accused Singh of sexual harassment and two First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered by the Delhi Police against Singh on two complaints lodged by women wrestlers alleging sexual harassment.

While one FIR was registered against Singh on the complaint of six major wrestlers, the other FIR was registered against him under provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

While the Delhi Police filed a chargesheet against Singh on the complaint of six wrestlers, it has filed a closure report in complaint of minor wrestler seeking dropping of POCSO case against Singh and court is yet to pronounce its order on the closure report filed by the Delhi Police.

Trial court earlier framed sexual harassment charges against Singh

The trial court earlier framed charges of sexual harassment, intimidation and outraging the modesty of women against Singh in the sexual harassment case lodged by female wrestlers.

Singh has pleaded not guilty to the offence of sexual harassment charges framed against him with respect to five women wrestlers and claimed trial.

The court had earlier discharged Singh in complaint filed by one of six women wrestlers who had lodged complaint against Singh for sexual harassment.

Delhi Police earlier filed chargesheet against Singh

The Delhi Police filed chargesheet against Singh under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Meanwhile, Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who reached the recently concluded Paris Olympic final but was disqualified from the Games for being overweight ahead of the gold medal bout, said on Thursday that the Delhi Police has withdrawn the security of the women wrestlers who are to testify against Singh in a city court on Friday.

“Delhi Police has withdrawn the security of the women wrestlers who are going to testify against Brij Bhushan in the court,” Vinesh wrote on X and tagged @DelhiPolice and Delhi and National commissions of women.
