Bahraich: Several shops, houses, and vehicles were set on fire as tensions increased in the Baharaich district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, a day after a 22-year-old was killed during an idol immersion procession. The man was killed during communal violence between the two communities. As per the police, while there was stone pelting during the violence, bullets were also fired leading to the killing of the individual.
Apart from his killing, some people were also reportedly injured in the incident. Sharing further details, the police said that while a case has been filed against a man, 30 others were also detained in connection with the unrest in the district. Protests were witnessed in several areas and slogans were raised even as the police conducted a flag march in the area where the incident took place on Sunday.
Senior officials reach the spot
Senior officials including Home Secretary Sanjeev Gupta and Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash reached the spot after receiving the information about the violence. The deceased has been identified as Ram Gopal Mishra of Rehua Mansoor village. Mishra was reportedly walking in the procession when he suffered a bullet injury. He was rushed to the district hospital following the incident. The man was declared dead during the treatment.
Following the development in the area, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asked the officials to stay in touch with religious organisations and see that the idol immersions were done on time. He also asked for the deployment of police personnel at the immersion sites.
Plot to disturb harmony won’t be successful: Keshav Prasad Maurya
Reacting to the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya took to X and wrote, “Any plot to disturb the peace and harmony of Uttar Pradesh will not be successful. Those protecting the rioters are once again becoming active, but we need to be cautious and vigilant. The state’s bright future will not be allowed to be hampered.”
Apart from him, senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra too took to X and wrote, “The news of violence in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, and the inaction of the administration are unfortunate. I urge to the chief minister and the state administration to take immediate action. They must take the public into confidence and stop the violence. Strictest action should be taken against the culprits.
