New Delhi: Pakistan’s senior national selector Aaqib Javed is not being considered to become the cricket team’s next white-ball coach and could be appointed chief of the Lahore-based National Cricket Academy.
Pakistan are on the lookout for a new white-ball coach after Gary Kirsten resigned due to differences with the country’s cricket board.
Reports on Tuesday suggested Javed and former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq are in the fray to succeed Kirsten, who quit after he was stripped of selection powers by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
It forced the PCB to ask red-ball coach Jason Gillespie to take over the team’s charge for the upcoming series in Australia.
Since Gillespie categorically told the PCB that he has agreed on an interim basis, the Board is searching for a permanent appointment.
Javed is keen on working on a project that involves development of young players, so he is being considered for the NCA post.
“The PCB contemplated appointing Aaqib as head coach of the white ball squad after the resignation of Gary Kirsten but he’s now more likely to accept the post of the National Cricket Academy in Lahore,” a PCB source told PTI.
“The Board is considering moving former Test spinner Nadeem Khan from his current position as Director NCA to head of the international cricket department with Aaqib taking over as head of the NCA,” the source added.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is also thinking of removing Usman Wahla from his post of head of international cricket and make him the Pakistan Super League (PSL) chief.
“There have also been issues between some of the players and Wahla over NOCs for foreign leagues and the central contracts,” the source said.
Wahla could be made head of the PSL but as he is a permanent employee, having strong political connections.
“In the next few days there will be shuffling of positions in the Board,” the source disclosed.
