New Delhi: Amid the ongoing tensions between India and Bangladesh, a group of expatriate Bangladeshi Hindus have urged India to push the UN for sanctions against Dhaka. The group has encouraged India to complete the ‘unfinished task of population exchange’ that would help in protecting minorities, including Hindus in the neighbouring country.
Bangladesh’s interim government has described the reports of targeting minorities in the country as exaggerated. It also claimed to have arrested nearly 80 people in connection with several incidents in recent times.
Group of ex-pats currently in India to meet political leaders
The group, whose members consist of those living in America and Europe, is currently in India to meet several political leaders. Their visit aims to take up the issue of Hindus and other minorities being targeted in Bangladesh after Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country.
Speaking to the media earlier in the day, the group spoke of the need to protect minorities, ingenious and tribal people who are currently living under the “hostile” atmosphere in Bangladesh. Apart from urging the government to seek global intervention, the group also urged India to seek UN sanctions on Bangladesh.
‘Complete the unfinished population exchange’
It also called upon India to complete the “unfinished population exchange from the 1947 Partition, to enable the secure resettlement of displaced minorities.” The group’s statement, however, did not provide more details on the proposal. The group noted that India must also ask Bangladesh’s interim government to create a protected zone in Hindu-majority regions to ensure the safety of minorities.
They also urged India to push for the assessment of contributions made by Bangladesh’s peacekeeping contributions. The country is among the largest providers of troops for UN missions across the globe.
