New Delhi: The Supreme Court would hear on January 15 matters related to farmers protest, including the health of framer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been sitting on indefinite fast for over last 45 days at the Khanduri border.
A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh would hear a plea filed on behalf of Dallewal seeking a direction to the Centre for implementing a proposal, including a legal guarantee of MSP on crops, that was made to the protesting farmers in 2021 after the farm laws were repealed and contempt action against the authorities of the Punjab government for not complying with its directions to move Dallewal to a hospital.
We have persuaded farmers to meet high-powered committee, bench was informed earlier
The bench, during the last hearing into the matter, was informed that a delegation of protesting farmers protesting at the Khanduri border have agreed to meet the high-powered committee appointed by the apex court earlier and authorities were expecting some breakthrough.
Dallewal met the apex court-appointed high powered committee on January 6.
Earlier, the apex court had asked the Centre that why couldn’t the government say to the protesting farmers that its doors were open and it would consider their genuine grievances.
Apex Court has expressed its concern on Dallewal’s health conditions
Dallewal, who is sitting on the indefinite fast since November 26, earlier refused to take medical aid offered by the Punjab government and amidst his deteriorating health condition, the top court, while hearing the matter, earlier expressed its concerns on Dallewal’s health and directed the Punjab government to to provide adequate, immediate medical aid to him without forcing him to break fast.
Apex Court on September 2 constituted a five-member high-powered committee
The apex court had on September 2 constituted a five-member high-powered committee under the chairmanship of former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Nawab Singh to amicably resolve the grievances of the protesting farmers. The other members of the said committee are – retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer BS Sandhu, professor Ranjit Singh Ghuman, Dr Sukhpal Singh, agricultural economist from the Punjab Agriculture University and Mohali resident Devinder Sharma.
