New Delhi: Disturbed by videos of Karnataka High Court judge Justice V Srishananada making rounds on social media platforms, where he is seen making gratuitous remarks in his courts room, the Supreme Court of India has sough a report from the registrar general of the Karnataka High Court within 2 weeks time.
Apex court initiates suo motu proceedings
This order by the Supreme Court of India comes on a suo motu proceeding initiated by the apex court and the matter was on Friday taken by a bench of 5 seniormost judges of the Supreme Court.
Chief justice of India DR DY Chandrachud who presided over the 5 judge bench said, “In this age of social media proceedings are closely watched and we have to act accordingly.”

The five-judge bench also said that there is a need for laying down guidelines for constitutional court judges from exercising restraint while making comments.
The court in its order said,”Our attention has been drawn to come comments made by Karnataka High Court judge justice V Srishananda during conduct of judicial proceedings. We have asked the Attorney General of India and Solicitor General to assist us. We direct the registrar general of the Karnataka High Court submit a report to this court after seeking directions from the Karnataka chief justice Justice Anjaria.”

Two recent videos of Justice V Srishananda in his court room had gone viral on social media where he was seen making comments against the Muslim community and a woman lawyer.
In the first video, making comment during a proceedings on traffic situation on Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, the judge referred to the Muslim-dominated area near the highway as Pakistan.
While in another video, the judge is seen to be making a gender insentive comment against a woman lawyer where he is saying that, “Tomorrow the woman lawyer who claims to know everything, may also claim to know the colour of the undergarment of the lawyer opposing him.”
