New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday (December 9) proposed to appoint an agency which could propose steps towards enhancing green cover in the national capital.
A bench comprising Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih asked senior advocate ADN Rao, who is the amicus curiae in the case concerning enhancing green cover in Delhi, to suggest names of the proposed agency by December 18, the next date of hearing.
Apex Court on June 26 directed to convene a meeting to discuss measures to enhance green cover
The top court had on June 26, 2024 directed the forest department secretary, Delhi government to convene a meeting to discuss the comprehensive measures to be taken to enhance the green cover of national capital territory of Delhi.
The bench was informed that two meetings were convened by the Delhi government after top court’s June 26 order, however, the report is not on record and the report will be filed.
No satisfactory measure is taken what this court expected: Apex Court
“On June 26, we had directed the Secretary of Forest Department of Delhi Government to convene a meeting to discuss comprehensive measure taken to enhance green cover in Delhi. No satisfactory measure is taken what this court expected,” the bench said and added, “We therefore propose to appoint an agency to suggest measures for enhancing green cover of National Capital Territory of Delhi. We permit the amicus to suggest names of the agencies which will be able to take up this task.”
The bench ordered the listing of the matter on December 18.
Apex Court earlier expressed its concern on felling of trees
The top court, while expressing its concern on felling of trees and loss of green cover, had directed the Delhi government and civic agencies to convene a meeting and discuss the comprehensive measures for enhancing the green cover of the national capital. The bench, while taking into consideration the illegal and high-ended acts of the felling of trees had also issued notice to the Delhi government, Forest and Environment Depart, Tree authority and civic agencies.
