Pune: A special court in Pune summoned Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case that was earlier filed by grandnephew of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. He has been asked to appear before the court in person on October 23.
In his complaint, Satyaki Savarkar alleged that the Congress leader had earlier made an objectionable remark against Hindutva icon Veer Savarkar. He also accused Rahul Gandhi of laying after the latter claimed that Veer Savarkar wrote about beating up a Muslim man with his friends in a book. Rahul Gandhi had also allegedly claimed that Savarkar was “happy to carry out the violence”.
Veer Savarkar’s grandson denies Rahul Gandhi’s allegations
Denying that any such incident ever took place, Satyaki Savarkar termed his allegations as “fictitious, false, and malicious.” While the court asked the police to probe the allegations the initial probe found that there was no such truth in the claim made by Rahul Gandhi.
In his complaint, Satyaki Savarkar said that Rahul Gandhi had been repeatedly defaming and abusing Savarkar for several years on several occasions. “On one such occasion, March 5, 2023, when Rahul Gandhi was addressing a gathering of the Overseas Congress in the United Kingdom, he intentionally made wild allegations against Savarkar, knowing the same to be untrue, to harm Savarkar’s reputation,” the complaint filed by Satyaki Savarkar read.
‘Rahul Gandhi’s presence necessary’
The case was transferred to another judge last month. Joint civil judge and judicial magistrate (first class) Amol Shinde will hear the case. Speaking to PTI, advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, who is fighting the case on behalf of Satyaki Savarkar, said that a summon was issued against the Congress leader, as his presence was necessary to answer the charges made by him.
