New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, and Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, on Tuesday met with the families of the five Muslim men who were allegedly killed in police firing in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh after tensions over the court directed survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in the city, sources told TV9 Network.
Reports said that 10-12 people came to meet the two senior Congress leaders at Sonia Gandhi’s official residence 10 Janpath in New Delhi.
Earlier, the Government of Uttar Pradesh had denied them permission to travel to violence-hit Sambhal and visit the affected families. Five people were killed in Sambhal after violence broke out over the survey of Shahi Jama Masjid directed by a local court.
Sambhal police had denied that they opened fire on protesters and said only tear gas was directed at the protesters to disperse them.
