New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday (January 10) issued notice and sought status report from the Uttar Pradesh government on a plea of Committee of Management, Shahi Jama Masjid, Sambhal.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justice SanJay Kumar was hearing a plea by the Committee of Management, Shahi Jama Masjid, Sambhal seeking direction to the District Magistrate to ensure that status quo is maintained with respect to the private well situated near the stairs/entrance of the mosque.
The bench directed the Sambhal administration to not execute the notice issued by the Nagar Palika.
The mosque committee in its plea claimed that a private well near the entrance of the mosque had been identified by authorities in Sambhal as part of their purported drive to revive old temples and wells in the city and said that opening the private well inside the mosque for Hindus to offer prayers will disturb the peace in the area.
