New Delhi: Ruud van Nistelrooy is at the helm of Manchester United, almost two decades since being of the team as a player. This time he is in the mix as the interim manager after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag from the club. He was already with the team as the assistant coach for the Premier League club.
Leading the team for the first time in the Carabao Cup, United won 5-2 over Leicester City. As the team heads into a clash with Chelsea over the weekend, followed by a Europa League game against PAOK, where United will look for their first win in the continental cup, Van Nistelrooy has a tight job in hand.
The former Real Madrid player believes that the club is in dire straits and wants to help the side in every way possible. He admits that it is a difficult job to undertake, and not many would like to be in his position. Van Nistelrooy admits that the situation isn’t favourable, but it is a work in progress.

Troubles at Manchester United
The team hasn’t won the Premier League title since 2012-13, and their addition to the trophy cabinet is the FA Cup after being trophyless for six years. As Ruben Amorim waits to take charge during November’s international break, Van Nistelrooy’s time is marked. However, in this brief period, he could make a difference for United and also prove his worth as a backroom staff member to the team.
Van Nistelrooy isn’t just the interim manager recruited for a brief time but has been with the team for a long time, having watched the action while Ten Hag was still in charge. He knows the atmosphere in United, as they have repeatedly failed. Van Nistelrooy’s connection to the team from his playing days obviously makes him have a soft corner for the team, which is why he wants the team to succeed so badly.
Having signed a contract of two years, the 48-year-old manager recently admitted that he knows he is just an interim manager who will move back to his assistant manager position once Amorim arrives. Still, he maintains that he remains “motivated even as an assistant manager.

Van Nistelrooy’s formation against Leicester was the one that Ten Hag deployed, and Amorim can take note of this. This is the duration when it should be less about taking bold, drastic steps. While the players looked more confident during the Carabaro Cup encounter, they will be tested during their game against Chelsea.
Van Nistelrooy has said that he had been appointed to help Ten Hag, the dismissal of the Dutchman has been a disappointment. For Van Nistelrooy and his club, their job in hand is to turn the season around as much as they can. For the 48-year-old coach, this period isn’t his screening for getting the gig. These three games could stamp his name as an excellent manager.
Amorim’s arrival could mean him moving out of Old Trafford to make space for the Portuguese manager’s staff. For Van Nistelrooy, there was hardly any question about him succeeding Ten Hag under any given circumstances. Van Nistelrooy’s experience at PSV had given him forewarning of the complications around managing a big club. Despite having a dream job, the former United player’s days as manager are marked. Yet, he faces the urgency of giving his everything to put United on the road to recovery.
