New Delhi: Ace Indian fashion designer Rohit Bal passed away at the age of 63 on November 1, 2024. For those unversed, the designer was battling health issues after a heart ailment in 2023. Rohit only recently returned to the fashion scene with an appearance at the Lakme Fashion Week.
Despite his challenges, Rohit Bal made an incredible comeback a few weeks ago at the FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week show, where he presented his last collection Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe with actor Ananya Panday as his showstopper. Seen dancing on the stage with a bright smile, the designer did not know that this would be his last show.

Who was Rohit Bal?
Born on May 8, 1961, Rohit Bal always implemented pieces of his homeland Kashmir in his work. The renowned designer pursued history at St Stephen’s College in Delhi. Following this, he went on to choose his true calling at the National Institute of Fashion Technology. Dubbed as ‘India’s master of fabric and fantasy, Rohit Bal began his career in 1986 with his brother’s export company. Soon gaining recognition, he launched his independent collection in 1990.
Rohit Bal was well known for his masterful craftsmanship that blended traditional and modern aesthetics effortlessly. The designer often used motifs such as the lotus and peacocks in his designs. Loved for his magnificent work, Rohit Bal was the recipient of numerous accolades and was celebrated for his contributions to Indian culture collections. Not only Indian celebs, but international stars such as Cindy Crawford and Uma Thurman have worn Rohti Bal’s work.
Partnering with massive global brands such as Christian Louboutin and Omega, Rohit Bal managed to expand his brand beyond fashion and venture into accessories and lifestyle products. Known for his attention to detail, Rohit Bal was reportedly the first designer among his peers to patent and copyright his designs.
