New Delhi: Newly-appointed Punjab Kings (PBKS) coach Ricky Ponting has revealed the strategies used by the franchise during the Indian Premier League (IPL) retention period. The Aussie veteran also shared his plans on how to make a mark at the upcoming mega auction which will take place in the last week of November most probably.
All the ten franchises announced their respective retention and released list on October 31, with Punjab Kings holding on to just two uncapped players in Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh and get into the auction well equipped with funds and ready to build a new squad. It seemed like a good strategy used by the Aussie legend, with stars like Kagiso Rabada, Sam Curran and Arshdeep Singh not being retained ahead of the mega auction.
Ponting excited for PBKS’ fresh start
Ponting, in an interview on The ICC Review, said that he was looking forward to building a squad from scratch for the Punjab franchise. He further said that whatever the franchise has done it’s well documented and he is excited about the fresh start. Ponting said that they are going with just two uncapped players with an idea of going into the auction with the biggest purse. This way they will have the ability to put a whole squad of players together.
Punjab to play new brand of cricket
The former Australian captain also revealed how he wants the franchise, who have failed to make the IPL playoffs since 2014, to play a completely fresh brand of cricket. Ponting went on to say that a couple of new coaching staff will come in for PBKS to make the franchise different not only from outside but also making the results on-field look different. He added that he wants Punjab to become the most entertaining franchise and group of players in the IPL.
