New Delhi: A collective cry for justice became more pronounced on Monday as protesters staged demonstrations and formed human chains on Kolkata streets to express their angst against the rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
Amid all the outcry that spilled onto city streets, there was a unique gesture that left a lasting impression on many as the protesting doctors tied rakhis on the wrists of cops and the policemen handed out toffees to the agitators in return. Healthcare professionals joined hands and staged a number of blockades on several roads in Kolkata. In an exceptional show of solidarity, several former students of RG Kar Medical College also took part in the protests while holding placards that called for speedy justice.
On Monday, the protests grew further as lawyers of the Calcutta High Court joined the agitation. With banners and placards, they marched on the streets as they cried for quick probe and justice. Taking part in the protest march, advocate Mousami Choudhry told ANI, “We want justice. We demand that the accused must be arrested as soon as possible and get the punishment.”
“We demand that the accused should be apprehended and punished as soon as possible. Our request to the administrator is to arrest the accused. The investigation is underway and the accused will be arrested soon,” another advocate of Calcutta High Court Navneet Mishra was quoted as saying by the news agency.
In Delhi, a group of resident doctors from Northern Railway Central Hospital staged a demonstration outside Nirman Bhawan on Monday, calling for justice for the victim. Doctors from Maulana Azad Medical College also joined the protest at Nirman Bhawan.
