New Delhi: In a shocking revelation, the parents of the young female medico, who was raped and murdered at the Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital in August last year, have alleged that they have not received their daughter’s death certificate from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) till now.
Even though the Panihati Municipality issued a cremation certificate, the woman’s parents have claimed that they have yet to receive her death certificate from the KMC, according to a India Today report.
Passing the buck
The parents reportedly pointed out that the KMC told them that the authorities of RG Kar Hospital would issue the death certificate. However, the hospital authorities said that KMC was supposed to provide it.
According to the victim’s parents, RG Kar Hospital authorities insist that the KMC must issue death certificates for all deaths, including those of “brought-dead” cases, that occur at the hospital. As KMC and hospital authorities pass the buck, the delay in the issuance of birth certificate has added to the distress to the grieving family. It is an irony of sorts that even though the accused has been convicted, the death certificate of the victim is hanging fire even after more than six months.
On August 9 last year, the body of the 31-year-old junior doctor was found in a semi-naked condition in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her death triggered widespread public outcry. Protests were staged across the nation.
The CBI filed a charge-sheet against Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police. On January 20, the trial court sentenced Roy, the lone convict, to life imprisonment until death in the case. The CBI had called for a death sentence for Roy.
On November 11, 2024, the trial started and it took 59 days to get over. On August 13, the CBI took over the case, and it was on December 4, the charges against the accused were framed.
