Kolkata: A Sealdah court will pronounce judgment on January 18 in the rape and murder of an on-duty woman doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year.
The hearing in the trial of the case was concluded on Thursday. The in-camera trial in the rape and murder case of the woman doctor commenced on November 12.
After the trial was concluded, the additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court said that the judgement in the case will be delivered on January 18.
CBI has sought death sentence to prime accused Roy
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the investigation of the case from the Kolkata Police on the orders of the High Court, has prayed from the trial court to award death sentence to prime accused Sanjay Roy.
Body of woman doctor was found with severe injuries
The 31-year-old woman doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year when she had gone to sleep in the seminar room of the hospital during a break in the night. The body of the on-duty woman doctor was later found with severe injuries in the seminar room.
Sealdah trial court on November 4 last year framed charges against Roy
The Kolkata Police filed chargesheet against Sanjay Roy, who was working as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police and was arrested the following day on August 10 for his alleged involvement in crime, and a Sealdah court framed charges against him. The Sealdah court had framed charges against Roy, who was booked in the case under section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Section 66 (which pertains to punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state) and 103 (punishment for murder), on November 4.
CBI has relied on various oral and documentary evidence to establish Roy was sole perpetrator
The CBI, in its chargesheet, relied on various oral and documentary evidence and forensic and scientific reports to establish that Roy was the sole perpetrator of rape and murder of the woman doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s seminar room on August 9 last year.
