Kolkata: The Sealdah court on Friday (December 13) granted bail to former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and former officer-in-charge of Tala police station Abhijit Mondal in the rape and murder case of an on-duty woman doctor at the hospital on August 9.
Ghosh and Mondal were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation for alleged tampering of evidence and delay in filing of First Information Report (FIR) respectively in the rape and murder case of the on-duty doctor.
Chargesheet against Ghosh and Mondal was not filed within mandatory 90-day period
The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) granted bail to Ghosh and Mondal as the chargesheet against them was not filed in the court within the mandatory 90-day period, a lawyer representing Ghosh told news agency PTI.
The CBI submitted before the court that investigation in the case was in progress.
Ghosh and Mondal were granted bail by the court on bail bonds of Rs 2,000 each and the court directed them to cooperate with the investigation.
Calcutta High Court transferred investigation of case from Kolkata Police to CBI
The investigation of the case was transferred from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
With the court granting bail to Mondal, he will come out of the jail, while Ghosh will continue to remain in judicial custody, as he has been also arrested by the CBI in the case of alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during his tenure as principal of the institute.

The trial against prime accused Sanjay Roy is currently going on before a Sealdah court and the Supreme Court, which was hearing the suo motu case it had initiated on its own on the rape and murder of the on-duty woman doctor, was on December 10 informed that 43 prosecution witnesses in the case has been examined before the trial court so far and the trial is likely to be concluded soon. The apex court had noted in its order that the trial in the case is likely to be concluded within one month.
