Kolkata: A Sealdah court on Saturday (January 18) convicted prime accused Sanjay Roy in the brutal rape and murder doctor of on-duty woman doctor at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year.
Additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das delivered the verdict.
Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police on August 10 last year
Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested by the Kolkata Police, which was initially investigating the case, a day after the crime on August 10. The case was later transferred from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the directions of the Calcutta High Court.
In-camera trial commenced on November 12 last year
The in-camera trial in the brutal rape and murder case of the on-duty woman doctor commenced before the trial court on November 12 last year and it concluded on January 9.
The CBI, in its chargesheet filed before the Sealdah trial court, relied on various oral and documentary evidence besides forensic and scientific reports to establish that Roy was the sole perpetrator of the brutal crime committed on the on-duty woman doctor at the state-run hospital’s seminar room on August 9 last year.
Sealdah trial court framed charges against Roy on November 4 last year
The CBI filed chargesheet against Roy, who was booked in the heinous rape and murder case under various sections of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for the alleged crime, and the charges were framed by the trial court against him on November 4 last year.
Supreme Court took took suo motu cognisance of case
The Supreme Court took a suo motu cognisance of the matter, which sparked nationwide outrage and prolonged protests seeking justice for the victim and adequate security for the doctors, and has been monitoring the investigation of the case.
