New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has called in 11 Kolkata police officers for questioning on Monday and Tuesday as part of its probe into criminal conspiracy and evidence tampering in the RG Kar rape-and-murder case.
The summons come two days after the parents of the murdered 32-year-old medico voiced concerns over the “tardy and ineffective investigation” and approached CBI Director Praveen Sood with their complaint.
On January 20, a sessions court in Kolkata sentenced civic volunteer Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment for the rape-and-murder of the junior doctor. A city court is also hearing a related case involving the arrests of former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and former local Tala OC Abhijit Mandal. But, they got bail after the CBI failed to file chargesheets within the mandatory 90-day period.
Cops summoned were mostly manning hospital’s police outpost
According to sources, the police officers summoned by the CBI now were mostly manning RG Kar Hospital’s police outpost, while some were stationed at the local Tala police station on August 9 and 10 of last year. The trainee doctor was raped and murdered on August 9. During the probe, injuries were found on her body revealing that the victim was raped before the murder. Her rape-and-murder sparked huge public outcry and there were widespread protests staged by different sections of the society across the country.
The CBI has interrogated a number of Kolkata police officers earlier as well. These included senior officers who were part of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) that investigated the crime before the probe agency was handed the case by the high court. Several of these cops had deposed in court in the trial that concluded a few weeks back.
However, the woman’s parents have pointed to alleged CBI lapses and shortcomings, including lack of cooperation to a shoddy investigation.
