New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear today the case of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Medical College and Hospital on August 9, which has sparked nationwide outrage, including outrage from the medical community.

The matter is listed before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra.

Medical services in the country have been affected following strike by doctors, demanding justice for the victim and strengthening of security in medical colleges and hospitals.
High Court earlier transferred probe from Kolkata Police to CBI
The Calcutta High Court earlier transferred the probe of the incident from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), saying that “something is missing” in the probe. The High Court order came on a bunch of pleas seeking transfer of the case to the central agency, including the parents of the victim.
The parents of the victim had moved the High Court, submitting that if the state police is permitted to conduct the investigation, then in all probability the investigation will be derailed and sought a direction to an independent body to look into the matter so that evidence is not tampered with.

The High Court last week, while hearing a bunch of pleas, lambasted the state machinery on vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital premises on the night of August 14. The High Court said that it was absolute failure of state machinery and directed the police and the hospital authority to file affidavits on the incident.

“If 7000 people had to come, they cannot come walking…this is absolute failure of state machinery,” the High Court bench had said and added, “Sorry state of affairs…how can doctors work without fear?”
The High Court is scheduled to further hear this week pleas on vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital premises on the night of August 14.
