RG Kar Hospital case: ‘Do not politicise situation’: SC on statements made by political leaders

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday urged the leaders of political parties not to politicise the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The Supreme Court urged this while hearing a suo motu cognisance it had taken on its own on the incident, following which doctors’ associations, student bodies and civic groups called agitations and protests across the country.

What did counsels representing CBI, West Bengal government say?

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud asked the political parties not to politicise the matter after counsels representing the CBI and West Bengal government traded barbs in the court during the hearing of the case over statements made by the Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the CBI, told the bench, “A sitting minister of the State of West Bengal says fingers pointing towards Mamata Banerjee will be chopped off.”

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who appeared for the West Bengal, retorted saying “And leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari (BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly) has said bullets will be fired,” Sibal said.

“Do not politicise the situation. Law will take its course,” CJI Chandrachud said.

Apex court passed a slew of directions on issue of safety, welfare of doctors

The bench, during the hearing, asked some tough questions from the state of West Bengal over delay in registration of the First Information Report (FIR) in the rape and murder of the trainee woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and asked from the state the sequence and timing of legal formalities conducted by the Kolkata Police.

The bench, while hearing the matter, passed a slew of directions on the issue of safety and welfare of doctors and urged protesting doctors to resume their work, saying that justice and medicine cannot be stopped.
