Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court will hear on Tuesday a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata.
A bench comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya directed on Monday for the listing of the PIL along with some other pleas with the same prayer for hearing on Monday.
Faulty investigation was being carried out by city police, petitioner alleged
The counsel representing the petitioner prayed from the court the transfer of probe from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, alleging that a faulty investigation was being carried out by the city police and that a cover-up attempt is being made into the incident.
Body of woman doctor was found inside hospital’s seminar hall on Friday
The body of the woman doctor, a second-year PG medical student, was found inside the hospital’s seminar hall on Friday and the preliminary autopsy has indicated that she was sexually assaulted before her murder.
The Kolkata Police has arrested a person in connection with the case and has booked him for the murder and rape. and a local court has remanded him to 14-day police custody.

The rape and the murder of the woman doctor in the campus of the government-run medical college and hospital has sparked nationwide outrage, including outrage from the medical community. Protesting against the alleged rape and murder of the woman doctor, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded immediate action into the matter. Thousands of doctors and post-graduate students held strikes across the country on Monday against the incident.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, while saying that she wanted the case to be tried by a fast track court, said that the would be handed over to the CBI if the local police fails to solve the case by Sunday.
“If the police are unable to solve this by Sunday, we will hand over the case to the CBI. However, the success rate of the central probe agency is very low,” the West Bengal Chief Minister told reporters in Kolkata after visiting the residence of the deceased doctor, news agency PTI reported.
