RG Kar hospital case: Calcutta HC adjourns hearing on pleas since matter being heard by SC

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday adjourned till September 4 the hearing on a bunch of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) over the alleged rape and murder of a women doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 and incidents of vandalism and violence at the hospital on August 15 since the matter is being heard by the Supreme Court.

Apex Court on Tuesday sought status report from CBI, West Bengal on investigations

The Supreme Court last week took suo motu cognisance of the incidents and a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dy Chandrachud on Tuesday sought the status report from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the progress of the investigation into rape and murder of the woman doctor and from the West Bengal government on the progress of the investigation into vandalism and violence on August 15.

Apex court constituted 10-member National Task Force for measures to ensure safety, dignity of doctors

The Supreme Court, while hearing the matter, constituted a 10 member National Task Force to formulate a national protocol for ensuring safety and facilities to doctors and healthcare staff in hospitals, securing hospitals from unruly persons, adequate rest rooms and duty rooms for doctors and healthcare staff.

Apex court also ordered for CISF security at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

The top court also ordered for deployment of CISF security at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and directed for the removal of the name, photos and videos of the deceased doctor from all social media platforms and news reports.

A bench comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya said that that since the orders of the Supreme Court on the issue covered all issues which are before the High Court, it was adjourning hearing on the 14 PILs before the High Court till September 4.

High Court on August 13 transferred probe from Kolkata Police to CBI

The High Court on August 13 transferred the probe of the incident from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, noting that “something is missing” in the probe while hearing pleas seeking transfer of the case to the central agency, including the parents of the victim.

The High Court on August 16 lambasted the State for vandalism and violence in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 15, saying it was absolute failure of state machinery.
