Kolkata: RG Kar Medical College’s former principal Sandip Ghosh on Wednesday approached the Supreme Court challenging Calcutta High Court’s order asking CBI to probe financial irregularities in the hospital The top court will hear the matter on September 6.
The plea is scheduled to be heard by a bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud. The latest development has come amid increasing scrutiny after the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the hospital last month. The CBI has asked for 10-day custody of Ghosh. The probe agency believes that several other people are also involved in the corruption which is required to be probed.
Large nexus required to be exposed: CBI
Speaking before the Alipore Judges Court, the CBI argued that while four persons have been arrested in the case, there is a large nexus that is required to be exposed, for which their custody is required. The CBI has charged Ghosh under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, which include – Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), Section 420 (cheating and dishonesty), and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Ghosh has been under the CBI scanner since August 16 in connection with the financial irregularities in the hospital during his tenure as also in connection with the rape and murder of the doctor.
Lawyers form a human chain
Meanwhile, several lawyers formed human chains on Wednesday outside the Calcutta High Court and Bankshall Court in Kolkata, seeking justice for the victim doctor. They shouted slogans outside court buildings and also held placards. They also took part in the rally for the victims.
