Kolkata: The junior doctors in Kolkata once again resumed their protests on Tuesday to press various demands to the West Bengal Government, including their safety and security in medical establishments across the state. The doctors had earlier resumed their work after a 42-day strike, following a meeting with state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
They were in protest earlier after the shocking rape and murder of a young doctor in RG Kar hospital came to light. The incident allegedly took place on August 9. Speaking to news agency PTI, Aniket Mahato, one of the junior doctors said that the protesting doctors did not see any positive approach from the state governments to fulfill their demands.
‘No attempt made to fulfill promises’
He alleged that no attempt was made to fulfill the promises made by Banerjee during her recent meetings with protesting students. Mahato observed that the protesting doctors did not have any other options but to resume protests. “Unless we see clear action from the state government on these demands, this complete cease work will continue,” the agency quoted him as saying further.

The senior doctors have also decided to organise a rally on Saturday evening to demand justice for the victim. Close to 60 civil society organisations are expected to attend this rally. This rally will end at the Academy of Fine Arts. Another rally had also been organised to be held in Kolkata on Wednesday. Several senior doctors and civil society groups are expected to participate in this rally.
The high Court permitted a peaceful rally
Earlier on Monday, the Calcutta Hight Cour had allowed the Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD) to conduct the rally in the city. The court had said that peaceful rally could be held from 5 pm to 6 pm. Even as the Kolkata Police had directed less number of participants and shortening of rally routes, the High Court did not issue such orders.
