Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today demanded results from the CBI in its investigation of the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as her government tabled an anti-rape bill in the Legislative Assembly.
Named the ‘Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024,’ it proposes the death penalty for those convicted in rape cases if their actions lead to the victim’s death or leave her in a vegetative state.
The legislation also proposes a life sentence without parole for those convicted of rape and gang rape. According to the state government, the bill aims to strengthen protections for women and children by revising and introducing new provisions related to rape and sexual offences.
