RG Kar case: TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee says 900 rapes occurred in last 10 days as protests rage

New Delhi: Amid the raging protests over the grisly rape-murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday made an observation on the issue. He pointed out that in the last 10 days, 900 rapes have occurred across India.

In a post on X, he wrote, “Over the past 10 days, while the nation has been protesting against the #RGKarMedicalcollege incident and demanding justice, 900 RAPES have occurred across different parts of India – DURING THE VERY TIME WHEN PEOPLE WERE ON THE STREETS PROTESTING AGAINST THIS HORRIBLE CRIME. Sadly, a lasting solution still remains largely undiscussed,” Abhishek posted.

He called for decisive action urgently, and said that it was imperative that there are strong laws that try and convict the culprit within 50 days. He added the state governments should immediately push the Union for a comprehensive anti-rape law that brings about swift and strict justice.

His post read, “We need strong laws that mandate TRIALS & CONVICTIONS WITHIN 50 days, followed by the severest punishments, not just empty promises. State governments must act and urgently push the Union for a comprehensive anti-rape law that ensures swift and strict justice. Anything less is merely symbolic and tragically ineffective.”

He concluded the post with an appeal: “WAKE UP INDIA”.

The post comes as the Supreme Court on Thursday asked some tough questions from West Bengal government over the delay in registration of the FIR in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case and the sequence and timing of legal formalities carried out by the Kolkata Police.

On the intervening night of August 14 and 15, following the vandalism at RG Kar, Abhishek wrote a post in which he slammed the rampage and demanded strict action against the rowdy elements. His Thursday post on the RG Kar issue comes after almost seven days and amid buzz about a growing chasm between him and his aunt, Mamata Banerjee.
